Police are investigating after a shooting killed two people and sent two others to the hospital in Rock Hill on Saturday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Rock Hill Police are continuing to investigate after a shooting killed two people and sent two others to the hospital on Saturday.
The shooting happened during a neighborhood block party on Southland Drive, which is near the intersection of Albright Road and Mt. Holly Road.
Just after 10 p.m., officers in the area heard several gunshots coming from the party.
More officers came and found the bodies of two shooting victims, 44-year-old Montest Mincey and 21-year-old Maricus Kirk. The two were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers diverted traffic in response to the shooting, not allowing anyone into the Southland Park neighborhood.
Police said a third victim, a 25-year-old woman, was treated at the scene after being shot. Later, police said a 24-year-old man showed up at a nearby hospital with “a minor gunshot graze wound” he stated occurred while at Southland Drive.
Rock Hill officials said no event application was submitted for Saturday’s block party event.
WCNC Charlotte’s Austin Walker spoke with Cory Hardin’s Mother. Cory was one of the organizers of the block party. His mother said she believed the suspect was not from the neighborhood or Rock Hill.
On Tuesday, Rock Hill Police said no one is in custody at this time. WCNC Charlotte was also told by police the department is working with other departments in the area since possible suspects or interviews stretch beyond city limits.
Anonymous witnesses told WCNC Charlotte that people were in ski masks at the block party. The department said this was the first they had heard of this and police are asking anyone with information to reach out. They said any information could help press the investigation forward.
Days later, the shooting has been at the top of mind for many. One man, who didn’t want to be identified over fears of the suspect not being in custody, walked us through how he and his wife had to run to safety.
“There were about four of 500 people out here,” he said. “We were out here in the driveway making funnel cakes for people to come through in case they wanted something sweet.”
He said he wanted to do a neighborly gesture, and amid the boiling oil, the attention shifted.
“I see a bunch of people running up the road, but hear no noise,” he said. “Then, gunshots, more gunshots, people hollering and crying … Maybe 20 or 25 gunshots.”
On Tuesday, he stood in the same spot thinking back to how he and his wife had to run to safety.
“Very drastic, I’ve never seen anything like that before,” he said. “Unreal, but it happened. Their loved ones lost their lives for basically nothing. Having a good time.”
