CLEVELAND (WJW) – Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb on Wednesday announced new policies ensuring union workers will be involved in future construction projects.
Bibb was joined for the special announcement by the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga Workforce Development Board and local union leaders.
City officials say the policy, called “Building Cleveland’s Future” represents a commitment to use project labor agreements on major public improvement projects costing at least $500,000.
Bibb said getting unions in involved in the projects will benefit works across the community.
“It’s so important because we know that unions create good-paying jobs for Cleveland residents. They’re a pathway to the middle class and also ensures we’re making sure we’re encouraging high-wage jobs for these critical infrastructure projects,” Bibb said.
The mayor said the city is working to prepare more future workers through its “Cleveland Builds Program,” which helps introduce young residents to career opportunities in the trades through apprenticeships and training.
