Man arrested in hotel, police say

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man accused of robbing a Las Vegas bank and attempting to rob another allegedly used an iPad to display his demand notes to tellers, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained.

Donald Malone, 53, faces charges of robbery, burglary and attempted robbery, documents said.

On Wednesday, May 29, Malone allegedly displayed a prewritten note on an iPad to a teller at a bank on Sunset Road near Eastern Avenue, documents said. The note said, “Give me large bills only, don’t try anything and don’t give any trackers or dye packs,” according to police.

The teller activated a silent alarm as a co-worker approached her station, which scared the man into leaving, officers said.

The next morning, a man with the same description as Malone showed another prewritten note on an iPad to a bank teller, this time at another area bank. According to police, the note said, “I am heavily armed, don’t move and don’t be suspicious, and to act like nothing is going on.” The teller handed over nearly $1,000 in cash during the robbery, police said.

Police later learned Malone was also a suspect in a bank robbery in Hermit, California, they said. A check on the car used in that robbery showed it was towed from a Las Vegas hotel the day before the attempted bank robbery on May 29, police said.

Police arrested Malone at a hotel on May 30, they said. Officers said he was wearing the same shirt as recorded in surveillance video from the robbery earlier that day. Officers also recovered an iPad.

During Malone’s first court appearance, Judge Daniel Westmeyer set bail at $50,000. Because of his status as a fugitive for his California charge, Malone remained at the Clark County Detention Center as of Thursday.
