NC woman shot after allegedly striking police with her vehicle

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS/WNCN) — A North Carolina woman was shot after police said she hit an officer with her vehicle on Saturday.
Huntersville police were investigating all morning long in the area of Cordial Lane and Merry Chase Lane.
Officials say around 1:15 a.m. Saturday, officers from the Huntersville Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance in the 14500 block of Cordial Lane.
When officers arrived, they met with the complainant involved in the incident, who informed police that the suspect was in her vehicle in the parking lot.
When approached, the suspect, later identified as Amanda Nicole Benton, 44, of Huntersville, accelerated and struck a Hunterville police officer.


The officer then open fired into Benton’s vehicle, ultimately hitting her.
First aid was rendered to Benton until medic crews arrived on the scene. Benton was transported to a local hospital where she is recovering from serious injuries.
Benton has been charged with the following:
- (F) Second-degree kidnapping
- (F) Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
- (M) 3 counts of simple assault
- (M) False imprisonment
- (M) Domestic assault
- (M) Resisting public officer
- (M) Assault with a deadly weapon
Two Huntersville officers were transported to Novant Health-Huntersville with minor injuries and have since been released.
In accordance with standard protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) was contacted to investigate the officer-involved shooting. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office has also been contacted.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the NCSBI investigation and an internal review.
