FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina entrepreneur Larry Swayne’s dream has taken him beyond his imagination.

In 2010, he started a food truck to begin his journey in food service.

“We did pizza, wings, wraps and shrimp,” he said.

He says the lines were so long because customers kept craving his special sauce.

“I had Mambo Sauce on the menu to have a taste of home from Washington, D.C. It’s a sweet sticky red sauce that’s a little tangy with a little kick,” Swayne said.

Swayne says it turned out the sauce was more than a little kick.

“This was my recipe and I put it on the menu. It really took on a life of its own,” he said.

His fame took him on to compete and win on Food Network’s Food Court Wars. Today, his food truck and restaurant business are closed.

“I learned being a business owner you’re the owner operating 24 hours a day and you never turn it off and you have to stay dedicated,” he said.

Swayne has since bottled his secret weapon and Wingzza Mambo Sauce is now sold in several states including North Carolina. Swayne says his faith really kept him going when money was tight, and he felt defeated.

“I continued to read my Bible and I was always drawn to Romans 8:28. All things work together for our good,” he said.

Swayne will have a meet and greet on Friday, May 24 at the U.S. Foods Chef’Store in Fayetteville from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
