NAPLES, Fla. – A man was arrested after allegedly firing a gun at his lover’s ex-boyfriend Sunday afternoon.
Around 3:19 p.m. the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said they received a call from a victim reporting that Robert Bethune, 43, shot at him near Golden Gate Boulevard East.
The victim confirmed that he and a woman named Shawnna Conerly were dating for three years, but broke up after two months. That is when she began dating Bethune.
The night before the shooting, the victim stated Conerly came back to stay with him.
In the victim’s statement, he said he noticed Bethune’s car in his driveway and went outside to tell him to get off his property.
The victim said he suspected that Conerly was dating/hanging out with Bethune and believes that he gives her drugs, according to the report.
The victim stated Bethune was holding a rifle sideways to show he was armed. When Bethune pointed the gun at the victim, he grabbed Conerly and ran into the house in fear, according to deputies.
While running away, the victim said he heard a single gunshot and watched Bethune place the gun in his trunk. The report states the victim did not see what Bethune was aiming at.
After getting inside, the victim and Conerly dove onto the ground and called police.
But, according to Conerly, things happened a little differently.
After waking up from a nap, Conerly said she asked Bethune to come pick her up. The report states Conerly walked outside to the two men arguing, and said the victim physically picked her up and brought her back into the house.
The victim called deputies and refused to let her leave. She said she never saw a gun or heard a gunshot.
CCSO states that Bethune had a right to be in the victim’s driveway because he was invited by Conerly. However, when Bethuna pointed a gun at the victim and fired a round to scare him, he committed aggravated assault.
The sheriff’s office says Conerly confirmed that the victim has never harmed her or done anything to make Bethune think she was in danger.
The report states that Bethune had many other options to handle the situation with the victim and Conerly.
Bethune was arrested on probable cause by CCSO. and his car was towed to the CCSO impound while waiting for a search warrant.
