The panel also authorized regulators to begin crafting rules that would allow marijuana to be sold at concerts, festivals and other events.
ALBANY — The state Cannabis Control Board on Wednesday approved more than 200 retail licenses and approved a measure that would temporarily allow the sale of cannabis at “growers showcase” events as officials seek to rescue New York’s stumbling rollout of the legal marijuana industry.
The 212 conditional retail licenses authorized by the board will increase the number of licensees statewide to 463. But only 20 licensed retail operators are selling recreational marijuana products, and many of those are delivery-only due to the delays in opening more retail shops.
“The provisional approval of today’s 212 (conditional) licenses by the Cannabis Control Board marks a momentous leap forward in our pursuit of an inclusive and fair cannabis industry,” said Tremaine Wright, chairwoman of the Cannabis Control Board. “These licensees are demonstrative of the innovation and diversity of New York state.”
