Musical history at the museum

HAVERHILL — The musical duo Sultana will perform “History and Legends through Song” at 7 p.m. Thursday at Buttonwoods Museum, 240 Water St.

The group will be debuting two songs about Haverhill history that were crafted for this show at the request of Buttonwoods Museum. One song is about the historical and controversial Haverhill icon Hannah Duston, the other about the tense struggle of 19th century women in the shoe factories to receive fair pay.

Sultana was created by Haverhill residents Jon and Li Waterman, two lifelong musicians and songwriters. Jon is also a licensed history teacher.

“History and Legends through Song” consists of songs and related history on tropic ranging from ancient Mesopotamia to modern times. The show is part of their “Live Music Making History Live” which Jon Waterman created in 2018.

Waterman said he believes that history and entertainment go hand in hand because songs, stories, and theatre have discussed history throughout the ages.

The program is funded by a grant from Haverhill Cultural Council, a local agency that promotes the availability of multi-cultural experiences.

Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Open house at local gun club

The clubhouse sits on 26 acres off of Chadwick Road in Bradford with a landing on Chadwick Pond where kayaks, canoes and other nonmotorized boats can be used. Members can fish, paddle to scope out the wildlife, or just enjoy nature.

The Haverhill Hound, Rod & Gun Club offers monthly safety classes to those looking to learn about the handling of firearms and obtain their Massachusetts license to carry.

The club hosts various marksmanship events, fun shoots, fishing derby events, and archery events throughout the year. These events are open to the public. Gun ranges are open year round.
