(KRON) — A shooting that took place in a movie theater early Wednesday morning is being investigated as an attempted murder, according to the Union City Police Department. Union City PD officers responded at around 12:50 a.m. to the Century Theaters at 32100 Union Landing Boulevard on a report of a shooting in one of the theaters.

Officers cleared the theater complex of all threats and evacuated the facility. One 19-year-old male victim was found inside one of the theaters and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, there was a disturbance inside the theater between several patrons. During the dispute, a suspect fired a handgun. There were no additional injuries or victims reported, police said.

The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arriving. Union City PD detectives are asking anyone who may have been at the theater or witnessed anything to contact Union City PD.

UCPD Sergeant Brandon Hayward says this kind of violence is very rare in Union City.

“In Union City there are very few shootings this calendar year, so this is a rare event,” he said. “That is a very safe complex. That’s a place you can bring your family, have a nice meal, watch a movie with your family.”

The theater was back open on Wednesday.
