Motorcyclist dead after a crash in Benson

BENSON, N.C. (WTVD) — A motorcyclist is dead after a crash Saturday night in Johnston County.

It happened on Godwin Lake Road in Benson. Roads were closed temporarily from Reedy Prong Road to NC Highway 50.

According to investigators, Russell Lindsey Barefoot, 47, of Benson was traveling on a black 2022 Harley Davidson FLTRX on Godwin. He crossed over the centerline and ran off the road. He was then ejected from the motorcycle and clipped a mailbox before resting in the front yard of a home.

Authorities said alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor.
