Two weeks ago, we lost our dear Tiki, just three months shy of her 15th birthday. The house has been so quiet and Barli has been shy without his more confident sister to help show him the way.

And so we started looking for a companion for Barli. Although we wanted a dog at least 30 pounds when grown, we started looking for a dog who, at least for a few months, would be smaller than Barli.

Shelters are packed and overflowing right now–so many that some open intake shelters in our area are no longer accepting dogs except on an emergency basis.

We started looking at shelters and rescues within a day’s drive of us…and saw this girl at the municipal shelter:

She had been at the shelter for six weeks, coming in as a stray so not much is known about her background.

I went over to see her on my own to see what I thought, fell in love with her and then made plans for John and Barli to come over for a meet and greet the next morning, which was Saturday.

We went over on Saturday and brought her back Saturday afternoon!

“Janelle” is now Hola (hello)–although we also thought of Ola (wave), since we hope she’ll enjoy trips to the beach!

Step one was to start Hola and Barli off on some long dog walks:

She is already doing great on leash–and we can’t wait to bring you more on Hola’s adventures with Barli!
