(Media News) Washington Post Leadership Changes: Sally Buzbee Steps Down, Matt Murray and Robert Winnett to Take Over
[ad_1]
The Washington Post announced Sunday that Executive Editor Sally Buzbee has stepped down after three years in the role. She will be succeeded by Matt Murray, former Editor in Chief of The Wall Street Journal, through this fall’s presidential election. Following Murray, Robert Winnett, Deputy Editor of the Telegraph Media Group, will assume the editor position as the newsroom restructures its operations.
No reason was provided for Buzbee’s departure, and she was not quoted in the announcement. Buzbee, the first woman to serve as executive editor of The Washington Post, was appointed in May 2021, succeeding Martin Baron.
The Post also announced the creation of a new division dedicated to reaching audiences with different consumption preferences, focusing on video storytelling, artificial intelligence, and flexible payment methods. This shift is part of a broader effort to revamp its subscription model, inspired by Politico’s tiered approach.
Publisher Will Lewis, who replaced Fred Ryan last year, emphasized the need for this restructuring due to significant financial losses, including a $77 million deficit last year. The new structure will involve three distinct newsrooms: core coverage areas, service/social, and opinions. This approach aims to diversify content delivery and better meet audience demands.
The Post recently won three Pulitzer Prizes, including one for national reporting on the impact of the AR-15 rifle.
