(Media News) 2023 Polk Awards Announce Winners for Outstanding Journalism

The 2023 George Polk Awards, announced by Long Island University, have recognized exceptional journalism in 14 categories, spotlighting coverage of the Israel/Gaza and Russia/Ukraine conflicts during the awards’ 75th anniversary. The awards also celebrated investigative reports on Elon Musk’s business practices, ethical questions surrounding U.S. Supreme Court justices, and police treatment of victims’ families, among others.

Winners included The New York Times for Foreign Reporting on the Israel-Hamas war, ProPublica for National Reporting on Supreme Court Justice ethics, and Streetsblog NYC for Local Reporting on New York’s black market for temporary license plates. The Gazette of Colorado Springs was recognized for State Reporting on the dysfunctional family court system, and Reuters received the Business Reporting award for exposing practices at Elon Musk’s companies.

Medical Reporting accolades were shared by CBS News and KFF Health News for uncovering FDA regulatory failures, while Justice Reporting went to freelance reporter Brian Howey for revealing manipulative police practices in California.

Magazine Reporting was awarded to Luke Mogelson of The New Yorker for his front-line coverage in Ukraine, and Photojournalism honors went to The New York Times’ Samar Abu Elouf and Yousef Masoud for documenting the Gaza conflict. The podcast “The Kids of Rutherford County” won for its investigation into juvenile justice abuses in Tennessee, and VICE News‘ Julia Steers and producer Amel Guettatfi were recognized for Television Reporting on Russian mercenaries.

Masha Gessen received the Commentary award for a New Yorker essay on the complexities of anti-Semitism and opposition to Israeli policies. The Sydney Schanberg Prize was awarded to Jason Motlagh of Rolling Stone for his reporting on the crisis in Haiti.

The awards ceremony will invite all past recipients to join this year’s winners for a celebratory luncheon in Manhattan, followed by a symposium on journalism in the digital age. The George Polk Awards continue to honor investigative and impactful journalism.
