Measles cluster in Broward: Florida surgeon general defers to parents on school attendance

WESTON, Fla. – Measles, a highly contagious airborne virus also known as rubeola, recently infected half a dozen Broward County Public Schools students even though it can be prevented by two doses of vaccine.
The Florida Department of Health was investigating the cluster first reported six days ago at Manatee Bay Elementary, at 19200 Manatee Isles Drive, in Weston.
“DOH is deferring to parents or guardians to make decisions about school attendance,” State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo wrote in a letter to parents and guardians of Manatee Bay students on Tuesday.
Ladapo did warn about the risk of exposure, so he asked parents to “watch” for symptoms such as “a rash that often develops on the face and neck,” or a “high fever, which can reach 105°F, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes.”
Ladapo advised that children who have symptoms “should not attend school” until these have “fully subsided without medication.” School administrators offered an “at-home learning” option.
