Police say the suspicious car has been cleared, with no hazardous material found.

WASHINGTON — A man is hospitalized in critical condition after police say he set himself on fire outside the Embassy of Israel in Northwest D.C. on Sunday

Just before 1 p.m., DC Fire received a call about a person on fire. When they arrived, they found the fire had been extinguished by Secret Service, said Vito Maggiolo, the public information officer with DC Fire.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for critical, life-threatening injuries, according to Maggiolo. The man is still at the hospital as of Sunday evening.

Investigators say the car the man allegedly arrived at the scene in is “deemed suspicious.” After searching it, the car was cleared and police say no hazardous material was found. That car was later towed.

DC Police said they were assisting the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The investigation into this incident is active and ongoing.
