A man was killed and a woman was injured Sunday in a shooting near businesses at Avondale Drive and North Roxboro Street.

Around 4:20 a.m., an officer with the Durham Police Department was off-duty when he heard gunshots in the 2200 block of Avondale Drive, according to police.

The officer, who was working at a nearby business, found a man and woman with gunshot wounds in a nearby parking lot.

EMS transported both people to a local hospital. The man was pronounced dead, and the woman had non-life-threatening injuries.

The scene was active for hours, clearing around 12:30 p.m. Earlier, crime scene tape was stretched across the road and blocked multiple businesses in the area, including the King D Tobacco & Vape Shop, Avondale Laundromat M&M Wireless and a location believed to be a nightclub.

Avondale Drive was closed from Howard Street to North Roxboro Street for several hours but has since reopened.
