PORTLAND, Oregon — One person is dead after a shooting when officers attempted to serve a search warrant in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

At 5:15 p.m. on Monday, detectives with PPB’s Major Crimes Team and the Special Emergency Reaction Team were serving a search warrant at a home near Southeast 124th Avenue and East Burnside Street, according to PPB.

At 6:34 p.m., while serving the search warrant, police said an adult male fired at officers. Officers shot back at the man and hit him. First responders were on scene and performed lifesaving measures, but at 6:39 p.m. the man was pronounced dead. A gun was found near the suspect, according to PPB.

PPB said that no officers were injured and all four officers directly involved will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol following any shooting involving an officer.

Detectives with the Portland Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and are investigating the shooting. Several streets in the area were closed due to the investigation.

No details at this time regarding the details of the search warrant, since the case regarding the warrant is active, according to PPB.

PPB Chief Bob Day responded to the scene and has brief Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s staff, and the City Attorney’s Office on the investigation.

“I’m grateful that our officers are going home safe tonight,” said Chief Day while speaking with media on scene. “These incidents highlight the risks our folks take every day.”

PBB also mentions as part of the force review process, the bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident, which includes the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and post shooting actions. The case will go before the Police Review Division, composed of community members, bureau members, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.
