Wherever you look there are makeup tips for women but, I don’t know about you but I always feel they are aimed at the younger ladies. I’ve made it to the ripe old age of 45 without ever being taught how to apply make up properly or which brands and colours suit me best. I have just made it up (excuse the pun) as I go and so far it’s worked out okay. However, as we ladies mature, our faces need a little bit more attention to keep us looking gorgeous.  So, to give you a helping hand I’m going to give you some makeup tips for older women right here.

Bring back your gorgeousness with my makeup tips for older women

Right ladies it’s time to dig out that worn down foundation and the dried-out mascara and throw it in the bin. Let’s start fresh and bring back your glow.

1. Shape your brows

As we get older our eyebrows begin to thin out, lose their colour and just generally look a little bit untidy. Using a filler will instantly make them look thicker and have more impact. Keep them well plucked or waxed too so you don’t get any stray hairs quietly creating a unibrow. (This is never a good look).

Recommendation: Rimmel London Brow This Way Fill & Sculpt Eyebrow Definer

2. Highlight your rosy cheeks

Adding a soft pink glow to your cheekbones is the ultimate trick in makeup tips for older women. Choosing a soft light blush that is hydrating will let you blend the colour seamlessly onto your skin giving you an instant warm radiant flush. If you use a brush that is nice and fluffy you will get just the right amount on your cheeks. You can also use your fingers, but I find this is not as easy to get an even spread and you may end up with blobs and mucky fingers.

Recommendation: KIKO Milano Unlimited Blush 08 | Long-Lasting Powder Blush

3. Eliminate the shine

If you have oily skin then you are fighting an uphill battle when it comes to make up. You may find it quite difficult to achieve the perfect glow without your face looking shiny or even greasy. So, the trick here is to find a powder that you can use to touch up areas that need extra attention like your forehead or T-zone without it looking like you’ve caked it on with a trowel.

Recommendation: Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder, Transparent

4. Try a new mascara

If your eyelashes are getting stuck together with clumps of black then it’s time to change your mascara. A good mascara should be able to lift your eyelashes and give them a gentle coating of colour without looking gloopy. You may have been using black mascara your entire life but as your eyes mature try switching to a softer colour that isn’t so harsh. A brown one would be perfect and will look incredibly flattering. This colour will give you definition without making your eyes look like spiders.

Recommendation: L’Oréal Paris Paradise, Intense Volume, Castor Oil-Enriched, Suitable for Sensitive Eyes, Soft Mascara Brush, Brown

5. False lashes could be for you

If you haven’t tried false eyelashes yet then I highly recommend giving it a go. You don’t need to spend a fortune with a beautician getting the permanent ones done. There are some super options you can buy from the pharmacy if it’s just a temporary makeover you’re looking for. As we get older just like our eyebrows our eyelashes can start to thin out and may need a little bit of assistance.

If you use a natural looking set of false eyelashes your eyes will have a real pop again and be ready to flutter with the best of them. Don’t go for false lashes that are too long because you may end up looking a bit ridiculous. You don’t want to do an impression of a camel.

Recommendation: Claire’s Eylure Fluttery Light No. 117 False Lashes

6. The right tools are essential

If you don’t have the right brushes to do your makeup then it’s going to be a lot more difficult to create that perfect look. If you can, throw out your old set and treat yourself to a brand-new set of fluffy brushes and tools. You will find it a lot easier to maintain your gorgeousness when your tools are clean and working as they should.

7. Nude is best

Ladies let’s grow old gracefully and apply natural and nude colours to accentuate your maturing loveliness. This is one of the most important makeup tips for older women. Please don’t use colours such as bright blues, greens and reds. Choosing eyeshadow that is natural looking will mean that you can wear it all day and into the evening if you don’t have time for a refresh. It will also match every outfit.

Recommendation: Rimmel Magnif’eyes Nude Edition Eyeshadow Palette, 12 shade

8. Foundation is your friend

For your not so young skin using a foundation maybe something that you should consider if you haven’t used it before. If you are like me you may have developed freckles, sunspots or burst blood vessels over the years making your face look a little patchy. Finding the perfect foundation for your skin will help to even out your skin tone and give you a beautiful blank canvas to apply your makeup on. Make sure you choose one that matches your skin tone. Be careful not to go too dark or orange unless you want to look like Donald Trump.

Recommendation: Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation Makeup for Combination/Oily Skin SPF 15, Longwear Medium-Full Coverage with Matte Finish, Nude

9. Lip gloss is a must have

You may think that lip gloss is for the youngsters but let me tell you it’s not. A natural looking lip gloss can make your face glow in ways you wouldn’t have considered possible. You don’t need bright red lipstick because a good shiny lip gloss is subtle but delivers full impact. It’s my new favourite thing in my handbag and I don’t leave the house without applying it. Even my 78-year-old mum wears it! If it is a good brand it will stay on your lips for a long time even if you are drinking your coffee and it will moisturise your lips very well keeping them soft through the cold weather.

Recommendation: KIKO Milano Lip Volume Tutu Rose | Perfecting and volumising lip cream

Makeup tips for older women – Final thoughts

Be brave and take the leap. Throw out all your old makeup and give your makeup bag a shot of energy with some new products. Having the right makeup will boost your confidence and make you feel gorgeous again. And please don’t forget you are applying this makeup for you and nobody else. You should look in the mirror after you have finished your make over and love what you see. Aim for enhancing your already beautiful face, not changing it.
