We frequently hear that America is more polarized today than in the past. In one sense, this seems obviously true, but how would we be sure? Social scientists give a mixed answer to this question – that is, we are more polarized in some respects, but the particular issues on which we disagree have shifted significantly. The polarization is no longer strictly between liberals and conservatives.
