Lawmakers want to rename Boston Convention and Exhibition Center after Thomas Menino

The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in the Seaport could soon be known by a new name. 

House lawmakers included renaming the convention center after former Mayor Thomas Menino in the economic development bill they released Monday, the Boston Herald reports. The move comes as the 10th anniversary of his death approaches. 

The bill stipulates that the convention center would be designated and known as the Thomas Michael Menino Convention and Exhibition Center.

Rep. Aaron Michlewitz told the Herald that Menino had the vision for redeveloping the Seaport.

“He had the steadfast desire to kind of get it done and I mean it’s not perfect, There’s definitely still some challenges related to the growth of it. But from where it is now to where it was is remarkable and a testament to his vision,” Michlewitz told the newspaper.

Angela Menino told the Herald it is “very emotional” for her husband to be remembered. 

“This is an incredible honor and our family couldn’t be more grateful to the leadership for thinking of him and recognizing his love of this city through the naming of the convention center… now I know he will always be remembered. Thank you, thank you,” she said, according to the newspaper. 

Menino died in October 2014 following a battle with cancer.

According to The Boston Globe, the House bill will be put to a vote on Thursday.
