Lauren Boebert overtakes Adam Frisch’s lead with razor thin margin

Republican congresswoman Lauren Boebert has overtaken Democratic challenger Adam Frisch in the latest vote count for Colorado’s 3rd district.

As of Thursday afternoon, Boebert has a razor-thin edge over Frisch, with under 400 extra votes. The New York Times‘s latest update shows the Republican with 50.06 percent of the vote to Frisch’s 49.94 percent. Colorado law requires a recount for any race where the gap between the final two candidates is 0.5 percent or less.

Boebert, one of former President Donald Trump‘s most ardent supporters, is unexpectedly facing a tight bid for re-election. Pollsters had predicted that she’d see an easy victory in the midterm elections. FiveThirtyEight’s final forecast had the conservative firebrand with a 97 in 100 chance of winning.

But the race in Colorado has been much closer than anyone expected, and may even cost Republicans control of the House. Although it’s looking like the GOP still has a path to flipping the lower congressional chamber, neither party has claimed the 218-seat threshold for a majority.

Boebert, who was endorsed by Trump, had also expected to win her district handily. On Tuesday, she tweeted, “The red wave has begun!”

This year, Republicans have failed to sweep Congress with a so-called “red wave,” despite historical trends and poll projections that favored GOP candidates in a number of key races.

After the latest vote count, Boebert tweeted, “Winning!”

Frisch, a self-described moderate, said in an interview on Wednesday that he expected for his contest to be narrow. “I spent 10 months trying to convince donors and journalists and political strategists everywhere that there was a path forward,” he told The Guardian. “I have this calm belief that that 40 percent of the Republican Party wants their party back.”

Still, Frisch said that he’s “feeling good & going to make sure every valid ballot counts.”

There is less than five percent of votes for Colorado’s 3rd district left to be counted, as of 1:30 p.m. ET.

Boebert was first elected to Congress in 2020 after she defeated incumbent Representative Scott Tipton in the Republican primaries and won the district over Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush, with just over 51 percent of the vote.

During her time in the House of Representatives, Boebert has risen as a MAGA star and become well-known for her advocacy for gun rights. She drew controversy for bragging about wanting to carry a weapon while on Capitol Hill and was involved in a standoff with Capitol Police last year after she refused a bag check.

She has also amplified Trump’s baseless claims of widespread election fraud in the 2020 election.
