Latino voters in Arizona support Sen. Mark Kelly by nearly 40 point margin, Univision poll finds

The polling, conducted by Univision, the Center for Latino/os and American Politics Research at Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University also shows support for Proposition 308, the measure opening in-state tuition rates to young undocumented immigrants who have grown up in the state. Among registered Latinos in the state, 68% support the proposition. Support is 55% among registered Arizonans overall.

The measure has been supported by dozens of state Republicans and earned the endorsement of former President Barack Obama just this week, who called it the “right thing to do.” Polling on the measure has been encouraging, especially considering that the proposition that initially barred higher education fairness to undocumented young people passed with support from two-thirds of voters more than 15 years ago.

Latinos and Arizonans overall also favor addressing both legalization for undocumented immigrants and border security. Republicans have often pushed a “border security first” approach that only seeks to delay long-overdue legalization. But when asked if they agreed with addressing border security first with a focus on legalization later, or addressing both at the same time, 68% of Latinos and 57% of Arizonans overall picked the second option. Support for a pathway to citizenship is overwhelming among Latino voters at 82%. But it’s also strong among Arizonans overall at 64%.

While polling also found Secretary of State Katie Hobbs leading right-wing extremist Kari Lake among registered Latino voters by 30 points, the Republican leads among registered voters overall by 2 points, with 14% undecided.

Polling by Univision, BSP Research, Shaw & Associates, and University of Texas last month also showed strong support among Latino registered voters for Nevada’s Catherine Cortez Masto. While the polling showed the Democratic senator 2 points ahead of Big Lie-pusher Adam Laxalt, she leads him by an overwhelming margin among Latinos, 60% to 27%. Incumbent Gov. Steve Sisolak also leads his Republican challenger, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, by 2 points. “The lead is at least partly supported by Latinos who favor Sisolak by a wide 34-point margin (60% -26%) similar to the gap in the Senate race,” Univision reported.

“The Arizona and Nevada findings echo takeaways from recent NILC Immigrant Justice Fund polling conducted by Hart Research in five Senate battleground states, which demonstrates voters’ enduring support for a path to citizenship despite GOP’s relentless nativism,” immigrant rights advocacy group America’s Voice said. That polling found that 73% of likely voters across Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin support legalization if conditions like background checks are met. As the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is under threat due to GOP litigation, respondents also said they’d be more likely to support a candidate who favors passing a law to protect young immigrants.

“Here is yet another proof point that Latino voters are a core part of Democrats’ potential paths to victory,” said Vanessa Cárdenas, America’s Voice executive director. “In Arizona and Nevada, two of the pivotal 2022 Senate races, a strong majority of Latino voters will likely vote Democrat, demonstrating that on key issues facing the country, Latinos support a progressive vision. “

“This includes immigration, where Latino voters overwhelmingly support citizenship,” Cárdenas continued. “In fact, like all voters, most Latino voters want Congress to deliver on a balanced approach to immigration reform, rejecting Republicans’ relentless nativist appeals and ‘border first’ excuses for inaction. Despite Republicans’ ugly anti-immigrant campaigning this cycle, Latino voters, like other American voters, support common sense solutions to immigration.”
