CHICAGO — A 7-year-old boy walked out of the hospital on Tuesday with a smile, just a week after he was injured when gunfire tore through his grandmother’s home on the city’s South Side.

The past week has been a rollercoaster for Rosie Liggins, whose 7-year-old grandson Zayden Garrett was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital last Monday after he was shot inside her home in the 11600 block of South Yale, in West Pullman.

“We’re headed home to finish recovery,” Liggins said.

Miraculously on Tuesday, Zayden walked out of the hospital with his grandmother by his side.

“He shouldn’t be out the hospital this soon, you know, he shouldn’t, but he’s here and I thank god that he is here,” Liggins said.

According to Liggins, Zayden was waiting for a pizza to arrive when shots were fired into her home. Zayden was hit in the back and grazed in the head.

“They had to give him two surgeries. He ended up with half of a lung on the right side. Top part of the left lung is gone,” Liggins said. “It’s a miracle, I have a miracle baby.”

While Zayden, a second grader, recovers, he can’t play sports and will have to stay out of school for a few more weeks.

“Other than that, he’s fine he’s normal he’s able to run around and start getting back on our nerves,” Liggins said.

Liggins said she is beyond grateful for Zayden’s recovery, but said the person who shot him is still out there and she wants justice served.

“We’re still asking the community and everyone else for any help they can give us, any leads that they can give us because right now we have none,” Liggins said.

With the hospital behind him, Zayden said he is looking forward to dressing up for Halloween.

Zayden’s 27-year-old uncle was also injured in the shooting and is recovering.

It remains unclear what led to the shooting and authorities said an investigation is ongoing. A $2,000 reward is also being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with more information that could help authorities in their investigation is asked to contact CPD Area Two Detectives at 312-747-8273 or dial 911.
