Black Eyed Peas Instant Pot

As with most bean recipes, black eyed peas take awhile to cook, so we love making Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas to shorten up the process. There is zero soaking required which is an added bonus.

Throw them in our popular Southern Black Eyed Peas recipe (pictured above) to cut down on the total time it takes to make.

Ingredients

Only two ingredients are required to make instant pot black eyed peas: dried beans and water or broth. We usually use Instant Pot Bone Broth for added nutrition and flavor.

No Soak Pressure Cooker Black Eyed Peas

No pressure, baby! You’ll get perfectly soft beans ready to eat without soaking them in advance. It’s one of the biggest benefits of using a pressure cooker.

How To Make Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas

Make sure you set aside 45 minutes to make black eyed peas in the Instant Pot.

  • Place the beans and broth/water in the pressure cooker
  • Pressure cook on high for 8-10 minutes
  • Natural release for 15 minutes
  • Strain the excess cooking liquid, if desired

Total Time

The beans only take 15 minutes to cook in a pressure cooker. Add the 10 minutes it takes to come to pressure and the 15 minutes it takes to naturally release, and you’re looking at a total of 40 minutes.

Instant Pot Beans

This dump and go Instant Pot Beans black eyed peas recipe is a perfect base recipe; you can add any herbs or spices you like. Think finely chopped onions, minced garlic, fresh thyme, bay leaves, creole seasoning and more.

Benefit Of Using Dried Beans

Using dried beans vs canned beans allows you to better control the texture, taste, and most importantly, sodium content of the final product. Take a quick look at the sodium content of canned beans; it’s off the charts.

Variations

Vegetarian

Use water or vegetable broth to keep these vegetarian/vegan.

Low Sodium

To keep the sodium level to a minimum use water or low sodium broth.

Expert Tips

  • Here are substitute for beef broth and chicken broth substitute lists, if you need some ideas.
  • Black-eyed peas should have a slight bite, not mushy.
  • Hard beans? If your beans aren’t softening it’s likely the beans are old. It’s best to purchase fresh black eyed peas. Keep cooking and they’ll soften up.
  • This instant pot black eyed peas recipe is suppose to have a bit of creamy liquid. If you want “less” liquid, strain out the liquid or smash some of the beans and stir. The smashed beans will soak up the liquid and thicken it up.
