Black Eyed Peas Instant Pot
As with most bean recipes, black eyed peas take awhile to cook, so we love making Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas to shorten up the process. There is zero soaking required which is an added bonus.

Ingredients
Only two ingredients are required to make instant pot black eyed peas: dried beans and water or broth. We usually use Instant Pot Bone Broth for added nutrition and flavor.
No Soak Pressure Cooker Black Eyed Peas
No pressure, baby! You’ll get perfectly soft beans ready to eat without soaking them in advance. It’s one of the biggest benefits of using a pressure cooker.
How To Make Instant Pot Black-Eyed Peas
Make sure you set aside 45 minutes to make black eyed peas in the Instant Pot.
- Place the beans and broth/water in the pressure cooker
- Pressure cook on high for 8-10 minutes
- Natural release for 15 minutes
- Strain the excess cooking liquid, if desired
Total Time
The beans only take 15 minutes to cook in a pressure cooker. Add the 10 minutes it takes to come to pressure and the 15 minutes it takes to naturally release, and you’re looking at a total of 40 minutes.

- Hard beans? If your beans aren’t softening it’s likely the beans are old. It’s best to purchase fresh black eyed peas. Keep cooking and they’ll soften up.
- This instant pot black eyed peas recipe is suppose to have a bit of creamy liquid. If you want “less” liquid, strain out the liquid or smash some of the beans and stir. The smashed beans will soak up the liquid and thicken it up.

- 1 Cup Black Eyed Peas, Rinsed and Sorted (*Note 1)
- 3 Cups Water or Broth

Rinse the beans and pick out any pebbles or old beans.

Add the beans and water/broth to the instant pot and stir to prevent sticking. Secure the lid, making sure the valve is in the sealed position.

Set pressure cooker to “pressure cook” or “manual” (depending on model) on high pressure for 8-10 minutes. (8 minutes for beans with a little bite to them, or 10 for softer beans).

Once the timer beeps, let naturally release for 15 minutes. Quick release any remaining pressure before removing the lid.

If desired, drain excess liquid. Serve or use in your desired black eyed peas recipe.
Note 2 – You can use water but the bone broth really amps up the flavor.
Note 3 – This is a basic black bean recipe. Add your favorites spices and herbs to enhance the beans if eating right out of the instant pot.
