(FOX40.COM) — An inmate died after he was found unresponsive in a Sacramento County jail cell on Friday.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the 41-year-old man died at about 11:15 p.m. at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC), located 10.5 miles south of Elk Grove.

The sheriff’s office said an inmate worker reported to deputies that another inmate needed medical assistance. Deputies responded to the situation and discovered the inmate was unresponsive in a locked cell.

Deputies immediately pulled the inmate out of the cell and first aid was administered by RCCC’s medical staff. Fire personnel from the Cosumnes Fire Department arrived to continue medical aid, but the inmate was later pronounced deceased at the jail, the sheriff’s office said.

The man had been in custody since March 28 after he was arrested for a felony warrant, officials said. The inmate had been housed in the Christopher Boone Facility (CBF) inside RCCC.

The sheriff’s office said an investigation into the cause of the inmate’s death will be conducted.
