Trent Brown has spent the last three seasons with the Patriots. According to Brown, 2023 was likely the end of his most recent tenure.

The veteran NFL tackle is set to become a free agent next week. Brown said he doesn’t anticipate re-signing in New England.

“I think we’re both looking in different directions,” Brown told SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Zig Fracassi on Saturday (h/t ESPN’s Mike Reiss).

The 30-year-old started just eight games for the Patriots in 2023 after making 16 starts the previous season. Brown played in 11 games total this past year, but he missed six games due to various injuries and illnesses, plus one healthy scratch.

Brown was reportedly eyeing an exit from New England mid-season in 2023. He allegedly “openly discussed plans to play” for another team in the Patriots’ locker room mid-season, according to the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed.

The soon-to-be-free-agent did play both right and left tackle for the Patriots this past season as a member of an ever-changing offensive line. New England seemingly deployed a different starting five each week, and regularly shifted players around due to injuries or performance issues mid-game.

Combine Brown’s possible departure with fellow offensive lineman Michael Onwenu’s, and the Patriots will forced to be in the market to pay for multiple trenchmen this offseason.

Brown spoke highly about his potential former teammate, who is also likely going to hit the free agent market, on SiriusXM.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do it, but I think he could probably play center too,” Brown said. “I think he has the mind for it … To play both guard [spots] and right tackle at a high level, I don’t think you’re going to find that too often.”

Both players could find themselves saying goodbye to New England come March 13, the first day NFL clubs can sign free agents.
