Hundreds gather to raise money for the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools

The Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools held its annual gala Saturday in Lake Mary.Hundreds of community members attended ‘A Night of Impact’ to help raise money to support students’ success.WESH 2’s Christina Watkins, an SCPS alum, emceed the event.The mission of the Foundation is to enhance education in Seminole County Public Schools through four goals: support student achievement through initiatives that increase opportunities and close the achievement gap, develop teachers and staff, support district alignment, and enhance community engagement. The Foundation invested more than $4.3 million last year.”Through support from the Foundation, our District can offer unique programs and outreach opportunities that benefit not only our students but the families we serve and our community. One example of this collaboration is the Student Success Express. This mobile registration and family resource vehicle is designed to bring essential services directly to the communities we serve. This innovative initiative will enhance our efforts to provide convenient access to educational resources, support services, and employment opportunities within SCPS,” said Supt. Serita Beamon.”These Foundation-supported initiatives help ensure Seminole County students, families, and community members have access to information resources and feel more connected to our school district and the opportunities available for every child that attends Seminole County Public Schools.” Last school, SCPS reported ending the school year with more than 3,400 homeless students and about half of all children on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. To help these students, each August, the Foundation distributes 3,500 backpacks filled with new school supplies to students in need. Click here to donate or volunteer.Also, throughout the school year, if students need school supplies, their teachers can shop at the free teacher store called Tools 4 Seminole Schools, one of the programs through the Foundation. Tools 4 Seminole Schools also gave out almost 11,000 books to Kindergarten through High School classrooms last year. In total, the Foundation distributed over $1.7 million in free school supplies to support students and teachers.Since the Foundation was founded in 1987, the nonprofit has raised over $65 million to support education through other programs such as the Take Stock in Children Program. Through this program, 114 students at every high school receive mentoring college success coaching, and when they graduate, they receive a college scholarship from the Foundation. The executive director of the Foundation says 100% of the seniors in the program graduated last year.
