Have you ever wondered what it would be like to transcend the limitations of your physical body and soar through the vast expanse of the astral plane? It’s like having your very own cosmic boarding pass to explore the realms of the unknown. And the gateways to these realms are astral projection meditations.

They’re designed to help you access altered states of consciousness on demand and springboard into an out-of-body experience. So if you want to learn how to practice meditation for astral projection, here’s where you can start:

These meditations allow you to channel your focus and explore the depths of your mind. Not only that, they help you transform yourself with a profound sense of awe.

What Is an Astral Projection Meditation?

Astral projection meditation is a powerful technique designed to facilitate astral travel—the process of consciously shifting your awareness beyond the boundaries of your physical body. It serves as a portal to realms of existence that are different from ordinary perception.

Simply put, it is meditation and astral projection combined: one serves as a way of accessing altered states of consciousness, and the other as a gateway to non-physical realms of existence.

But how does it work?

The principles and techniques of astral projection meditation are rooted in the power of focused intention and heightened awareness, which allows you to have an out-of-body experience.

According to Jade Shaw, astral projection expert and trainer of Mindvalley’s The Art of Astral Projection Quest, astral projection is a secret skill you never knew you had. It’s something you can access consciously for insight, guidance, and healing.

So the meditation tied to it enables you to induce this experience and safely navigate the astral plane. On top of that, it offers numerous benefits, such as accelerated personal growth, enhanced self-awareness, and a deeper connection to the spiritual aspects of your being.

How to Achieve Astral Projection Through Meditation

If you’re itching to unlock the realm of astral projection, you’ve got to master the “mind awake, body asleep” state (or MABA, for short). It’s a type of altered state similar to a trance.

It’s a state that can be compared to an experience of deep relaxation—one where you feel as if you’ve melted into the space around you. Jade calls it “total body dissolution,” otherwise known as ego death or ego dissolution, and this implies dissolving your sense of identity.

Interestingly, we naturally pass through two transitional states of consciousness each day: the hypnagogic and hypnopompic states. Clinical psychiatrists explain them in this way:

  • Hypnagogic refers to the phenomenon when you’re falling asleep, and
  • Hypnopompic refers to the phenomenon when you wake up from sleep.

So what does all this have to do with astral projection meditation?

In order to harness the MABA state, you need to achieve a high level of relaxation without allowing your mind to drift off—essentially, a hypnagogic state. Jade calls this mindfulness approach “beditation,” paying attention to the present moment and being aware of what’s happening without judgment.

And there are a few techniques that can help: yoga nidra is one, and astral projection meditation is another.

Step 1. Breathe

It starts with the 4-7-8 breathing technique, developed by Dr. Andrew Weil. Based on an ancient yogic pranayama technique, it’s scientifically proven to deeply relax and replenish the body.

Since it switches on the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps us rest and digest, it’s a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system.

The 4-7-8 breathing technique:

  1. Inhale through your nose for the count of four;
  2. Then hold your breath for seven counts;
  3. Exhale out for eight counts;
  4. Breathe in again for four; and
  5. Repeat seven full rounds.

Step 2. Observe

As soon as you finish your breathing technique, return to your natural breathing.

Relax. There’s nothing else for you to do but go deeper into relaxation, keeping your mind awake and aware.

Observe your breathing if you’re drifting off. Observe your thoughts, allowing them to pass through your awareness.

Step 3. Enter your sweet spot

As you’re driving the car of your awareness along the hypnagogic highway, enter your sweet spot of being neither too awake nor too asleep.

Don’t rush to exit your body just yet. Master your sweet spot by making it familiar. This beditation is your tool to harness MABA.

Practice it every night, and very soon, it will take you to the astral planes of your choice.

Enjoy your epic ride through the hypnagogic highway.

Mindvalley’s Astral Projection Meditations

There are three steps to astral projection: the MABA state, the vibrational state, and the sense of separation.

While the ultimate step of moving out of the body is the most exciting one, it’s impossible to have an intentional out-of-body experience without harnessing the previous two.

So astral projection meditations primarily focus on training you to master these two altered states of consciousness. Let’s look at three examples of such meditations.

The hypnagogic mindfulness meditation

Jade explains that if you don’t harness the MABA state, it’s very hard to astral project unless it happens spontaneously. In her Quest, you can practice this meditation specifically designed to help you achieve this natural state intentionally.

The vibrational state meditation

The second stage is the vibrational state—the energetic gateway you pass through to enter an OBE. Jade compares it with the white noise of the radio: you are the radio, and the new channel you tune into is your new reality.

This meditation induces this altered state, assisting you to become deeply relaxed, without falling asleep.

Ladder and doorway exit meditation

Finally, the actual exit techniques: the ladder and the doorway techniques.

The ladder technique is an adaptation of the rope technique. Unlike the latter, the rope technique is easier to practice because not everyone has real experience climbing ropes.

The doorway technique utilizes active imagination to visualize a special door representing a passage between the physical and non-physical dimensions.

In The Art of Astral Projection Quest, you will practice these techniques using meditation that combines them both to help you transition from the vibrational state to astral projection.

So what makes these astral projection-guided meditations so powerful? They use 3D gamma synchronization sound technology, engineered by The Monroe Institute.

And they’re available to Mindvalley members for free as part of Jade’s Quest.
