This weekend I have … a half-hour, and I want a show with teeth.
‘Love & Anarchy’
When to watch: Now, on Netflix.
This Swedish dramedy (in Swedish, with subtitles or dubbed) follows Sofie (Ida Engvoll), a married mother of two who works in the Stockholm publishing industry. To her own surprise, she kind of blows up her life when she meets Max, a young I.T. guy in the office. The two start a mischievous and then increasingly intense power-exchange game, a rich source of “what am I doing?” thrills and naughty transgressions. “Love” has a bright and exciting cynicism, and it plays to both a madcap side and a more emotional, grounded one. If you miss the office on “Younger,” watch this.
… a few hours, and I want a bit of everything.
‘Walking on Sunshine’
When to watch: Now, on MHz Choice.
More happens in the pilot of “Sunshine” than in full seasons of other shows. This Austrian dramedy (in German, with subtitles) kicks off with blistering workplace bickering, fragile sobriety, academic fraud, government inquests, vehicular manslaughter, the re-ignition of old conflicts, maternal body-shaming, on-camera sabotage and a quirky inheritance decision. Tilia (Proschat Madani) runs a TV weather show and is furious when she is forced to make her brother-in-law, a disgraced newscaster, her new anchor. He isn’t too thrilled about it, either. If you like behind-the-scenes tales but not the smugness of many shows about shows, watch this. Ten episodes are available now, and Season 2 arrives on Oct. 31.
… a few hours, and I want something eerie.
‘Les Revenants’
When to watch: Now, on Amazon (Season 1 only), AMC+ and Topic.
If you crave fog, spookiness, mystery, the undead — but in a sexy, brooding French way — “Les Revenants” (in French, with subtitles) is streaming again for your moody pleasure. The show is set in a small town where one day several dead people re-emerge, looking just as they did when they died and eager to return to their lives. Some of their bereft loved ones are thrilled, but others aren’t quite sure how to feel; how do you respond when your undead twin reappears, and she is still a young 15, but you’re now an independent 19-year-old? “Les Revenants” is gorgeous and fascinating, a show whose images and ideas make a lasting impression.
