How Much Watching Time Do You Have This Weekend?
[ad_1]
This weekend I have … a half-hour, and Skipper is cool, too.
‘XO, Kitty’
When to watch: Now, on Netflix.
This bubbly 10-episode spinoff of the “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” movies turns its attention to Kitty (Anna Cathcart), the matchmaking little sister in the saga. Now a junior in high school, she has landed a scholarship to an international academy in Seoul — the same school her late mother attended, and also the school her long-distance Korean boyfriend goes to, so maybe she’ll just surprise him. “XO” goes for every rom-com and K-drama shenanigan possible, and the result is an earnest series for viewers still a little too young for “Gossip Girl.” If you wish “Wednesday” had been a boppy comedy of errors, try this.
… two hours, and I like religious disgrace documentaries.
‘The Secrets of Hillsong’
When to watch: Friday at 10 p.m., on FX.
Carl Lentz rose to fame as the pastor of the New York outpost of the global megachurch Hillsong, baptizing Justin Bieber and exemplifying the PreachersNSneakers brand of pop Christianity. Then came the affairs, the exposés, a swift canning and a retreat from public life. “Secrets” includes Lentz’s first interviews since he was fired in 2020, but the four-episode documentary is most interesting in its second half, when it turns its attention to Hillsong’s origins in Australia — where its founder has been accused of covering up child sex abuse.
If you can’t pass up a documentary about a religious movement whose adherents start out having fun but then later feel defrauded by the charismatic liars to whom they gave their time, money and adoration — and who, hey, now that you mention it, also treat women terribly — this is a solid entry in the genre. Two episodes air on Friday, and two more next Friday.
… a few hours, and I want a drama to wreck me.
‘Rectify’
When to watch: Now, on AMC+; Season 1 is also available on the Roku Channel and Amazon.
“Rectify” is among the most gorgeous and contemplative dramas of the modern era, though more than a decade after its debut it still feels like an under-the-radar show. It has come and gone from streaming platforms, but maybe it will become more popular now that the first season is available free on Roku. When Daniel (Aden Young) is released from prison after 19 years on death row for a rape and murder he was convicted of as a teen, some members of his family and community are elated; others less so.
But this is not another grimy murder drama. It is instead a slow and lyrical portrait, one in which violence and fragility are woven together. If your favorite character on “Succession” is Gerri, watch this — J. Smith-Cameron is wonderful as Daniel’s mother.
