This weekend I have … 40 minutes, and I crave sunshine.
‘Make or Break’
When to watch: Season 2 begins Friday, on AppleTV+.
This pro-surfing documentary series is back for its second season, with footage that is perhaps even more sun-soaked and majestic than before. “Make” is glamorous and formulaic, its superficiality almost part of its appeal. Each episode centers on a different surfer or two (including Kelly Slater), new striving heroes in whom viewers can become briefly but intensely invested. If you like the similar “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” or if you share my passion for the fascinating ways professional athletes describe their aches and injuries, watch this. Four episodes arrive Friday, and four more on Feb. 24.
… a few hours, and buy buy buy.
‘The Exchange’
When to watch: Now, on Netflix.
Farida (Rawan Mahdi) is newly divorced and is both financially and emotionally adrift when her flashier, brassier cousin Munira (Mona Hussain) convinces her to come work with her at the Kuwait stock exchange. It is 1988, and things are changing — why shouldn’t they be part of it? “The Exchange” (in Arabic, with subtitles or dubbed) has the peppiness and mesmerizing costuming of shows like “GLOW” and “Black Monday,” but its hectic empowerment narrative is more grounded drama than goofy romp, and its strong performances add depth and weight to the expected beats. There are only six episodes so far, so binge gently.
… eight hours, and I love assassins.
‘Kleo’
When to watch: Now, on Netflix.
Despite what we’ve been told, revenge is actually a dish best served cool — as in stylish and snazzy, with distinctive taste in music and outfits and haircuts and zingers. Kleo (Jella Haase) was a Stasi assassin whose agency turned on her, but now that the Berlin Wall has come down, she’s been let out of prison and can exact her brand of justice on all who betrayed her. The show (in German, with subtitles or dubbed) is violent, but in that arch way, like “Killing Eve” or “Wedding Season,” and its 1980s production design is top notch. If you like zesty murder-quest shows but your true love is spotting funky lamps, weird wallpaper and unusual housewares in the background, your time has come.
