How much rainfall did NC get from the latest tropical system?

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The sun finally came back out Wednesday, so nice to see the sun finally back out, but it was a busy weekend and start to the week in North Carolina.
The low pressure (Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight) dumped rain across our state, especially along the coast. In this graphic from the North Carolina State Climate Office, it’s easy to see where the heaviest rain fell. The rainfall numbers are impressive, and not in a good way.
Nearly 21 inches fell over a period of a few days at Carolina Beach and Bald Head Island. By the way, the State Climate Office says that rain total from Bald Head Island came Saturday through Monday, but just on Monday, Bald Head Island picked up almost 12.5 inches of rain, which is the most in one day on the island since 2015. Surrounding areas like Southport, St. James and Sunny Point were also inundated with more than 15 inches of rain through this event.

The worst of the weather by far was along the coast, but we didn’t escape it here in central North Carolina. One of the rainiest reports we received was of more than four inches of rain four miles east of Fuquay-Varina, but Fayetteville, Raeford, Sanford, even near Lillington picked up nearly three inches of rain. The rain did start to lessen north of the Triangle, but the saturated soil and gusty winds that followed were part of the reason we had a few power outages and falling trees.

Remember, September tends to be our wettest month mostly due to impacts from tropical systems.
