Hornets let go of Seth Curry, JT Thor – At The Hive

[ad_1]

The Charlotte Hornets announced a pair of roster moves as they prep for the start of free agency on Monday. They released Seth Curry, whose contract was non-guaranteed for next season, and they declined the team option on JT Thor’s contract.

The release of Curry is sad but not terribly surprising. That said, this doesn’t mean the Curry era in Charlotte is over for good. Adrian Wojnarowksi is reporting that there is mutual interest in Curry returning under a new contract.

It was a different mechanism, but the Hornets effectively did the same thing to JT Thor. The fourth year of his contract was a team option, and the Hornets elected not to pick it up, making Thor an unrestricted free agent. He played three seasons with the Hornets appearing in 162 games, starting 11. He showed some defensive promise, but not enough to make up for his anemic offensive game that never showed any real signs of development. He won’t return to the Hornets in all likelihood and will try to latch on with another team, but I’d guess he’s in the G League next season.

The Hornets aren’t done with roster decisions. Bryce McGowens and Aleksej Pokusevski are on unguaranteed deals and can be waived without penalty at any time. Davis Bertans currently has a $16 million cap hit for next season, but the Hornets can waive him and save roughly 11 million of those dollars.

Free agency officially starts on July 1st. NBA teams are permitted to negotiate with possible signings at 6:00pm Eastern on Sunday June 30th.
