Rylee Holtorf secured the series sweep for the No. 8 Washington softball team with a walkoff home run in the ninth for the 1-0 victory over Oregon State on Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium.
Ruby Meylan got the start in the circle and threw 82/3 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks allowed. It was her 10th career game with 10 or more strikeouts to move her into sixth place all-time in program history.
Sidne Peters came on in relief to pick up her fifth win of the season and second of the weekend. Peters struck out a batter in her one out recorded.
Behind strong pitching and defense, Washington (25-5, 9-3 Pac-12) stranded 12 Beavers on base to keep the Huskies in the game.
OTHER SOFTBALL
• Nicola Simpson was stellar in the circle and at the plate, allowing just one run across five innings and hitting a three-run home run to lead Seattle U (14-19, 6-3 WAC) to a 6-2 win over visiting Stephen F. Austin.
BASEBALL
• The Tacoma Rainiers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within a run, but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 9-7 loss to Oklahoma City.
Nick Solak had three hits, and Cade Marlowe and Leo Rivas had two hits each for Tacoma (1-1), which won its season opener on Friday 1-0.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
• Aiva Arquette homered and drove in three runs, and Sam DeCarlo went 2 for 4 with four RBI as host Washington (8-12-1, 3-6 Pac-12) beat Washington State 11-5 to secure its third straight Apple Cup series win. Max Hartman went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI for the Cougars (16-11, 6-6).
• Mateo Zappieri and Trevor Antonson homered, but Seattle U (7-20) fell to host Oregon 14-7 and was swept in the four-game series.
RUGBY
• Down 14 at the half, the Seawolves (5-1-0) shut down host Chicago (1-4-1) in the second half and earned a last-minute 34-26 victory.
The Seawolves return home Friday to face the Dallas Jackals at Starfire Sports Complex.
ROWING
• In a field of six teams ranked in the top 10, the No. 3-ranked Washington men won the Nathan Benderson Cup at the IRA Sarasota Invitational in Florida. UW won the second, third and fourth varsity eights races
TRACK AND FIELD
• Washington State’s Maribel Caicedo clocked a 100-meter hurdles time of 12.93 seconds to break her own Ecuadorian national record while also setting a new WSU women’s program record at the Stanford Invitational.
• At the Stanford Invitational, Washington athletes either winning their events outright, or finishing as the top collegiate in the field, included Jayden White in the men’s hammer throw, Saydi Orange in the women’s collegiate javelin throw, Trevontay Smith in the men’s triple jump and Chloe Foerster in the women’s 800 meters.
TENNIS
• The Seattle U men (3-11) fell to visiting Abilene Christian 4-3.
• The visiting Seattle U women (7-7) lost to Tarleton State 5-2.
HOCKEY
• Austin Roest scored twice and the Everett Silvertips beat the Vancouver Giants 2-1 to even their best-of-seven first-round Western Conference playoff series at 1-1.
