Hikers warned about heat risks this weekend in Colorado

[ad_1]

DENVER (KDVR) — Extremely high temperatures are expected this weekend. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is warning hikers and campers to plan carefully.

Here are a few tips for anyone planning to recreate outdoors in the summer heat.

Does your hike have shade or water access?

Heat stroke and sunburn are common risks linked to strenuous activity during severe heat. Hikers are warned that many of Colorado’s parks and trails are in areas that have limited shade or water access.

“Lory doesn’t have as much cover up in Fort Collins, things like that. So that is something to consider too when you’re going out on a hike” CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose told FOX31.

Prepare for intense sunlight

Another thing to consider is Colorado’s high elevation.

“Closer to the sun at that point, which means you’re more exposed, more likely to be sunburned, and it’s just difficult to hike,” Van Hoose said.

Crowding is to be expected

Many tourists prefer to visit one of Colorado’s many reservoirs or lakes. Crowding should be expected during the weekends.

“More popular state parks fill up because people do want to be near water. They do want to cool off. So places like Cherry Creek and Chatfield get full into capacity earlier in the day,” Van Hoose said.

Cherry Creek State Park’s swim beach is seen from SkyFOX on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Check for closures, advisories

Check CPW’s website for the latest advisories and closure information.

One tourist enjoying Clear Creek in Golden offered this advice for anyone planning to head outdoors this weekend: “Tolerate the heat. If they can’t, stay inside.”
