High heat set for Oregon Wednesday, records threatened

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Summer heat returns as afternoon highs push into the mid-90s Wednesday.
The start of Oregon and Washington’s latest heat wave begins Wednesday and lasts through the weekend. Portland’s mid-90s will feel cool compared to the 100-plus-degree heat expected Thursday.
That’s where not only daily record highs are threatened, but early morning warm lows are also expected to fall this week. Early morning temperatures will sit in the mid to upper 60s, if not the low 70s, through this latest round of heat. It’s the lack of overnight cooling that could make this latest round of heat extra impactful.
A KOIN 6 Weather Alert goes into effect Thursday and lasts through Friday. That comes as The National Weather Service out of Portland puts the Willamette Valley under an Excessive Heat Warning for the same time.
Easterly winds will start to increase later in the week. The easterly winds will help decrease Portland’s air quality as western wildfire smoke funnels into the Willamette Valley. Air quality will likely be impacted for some, and could even keep temperatures cooler by a few degrees than what’s predicted. Easterly winds will also keep Oregon and Washington’s wildfire threat elevated through the weekend.

Portland’s summer heat will start to fade after September heat records are threatened late this week. Afternoon highs will return to near-normal conditions by the start of next week. The cooler and potentially wetter weather pattern will make it feel more like September in the Pacific Northwest.
