GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Greensboro police and community members are hoping for tips in a triple shooting that killed a grandfather and almost killed a toddler.

It happened on March 26 in Greensboro in the 1100 block of Vance Street.

Robert Franklin Wright, his wife and their grandchild were in a parked car around 10 p.m. that night when all three were shot.

Wright, 71, died at the scene.

Officers and community members handed out flyers in the neighborhood near Arlington Park on Wednesday where this shooting happened.

“I have nine-year-old twins, but it wasn’t long ago that they were that age,” said Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson, looking at the photo of the toddler who was shot.

Thompson, along with dozens of officers and community members, took to the streets Wednesday evening.

“It’s heartbreaking that we have to be out here, walking to find out information about a child … who was almost shot and killed,” Thompson said.

Victim advocate Mary Nero says the toddler faces a long recovery.

“He survived within an inch of his life. Had the bullet … gone any other direction, it would have been fatal for him as well,” she said.

Officers walked up dozens of driveways to place a flyer on every door.

With the number of homes nearby and the amount of traffic, investigators are confident someone has information to solve the case.

“And if there is ever a case where somebody knows something but is keeping silent, this should be the one where you make an exception and do the right thing and come forward,” Nero said.

“I don’t know that anybody thinks this child deserves to be shot, and we need to find out who did this,” Thompson said.

The flyer asks anyone with information to call Crimestoppers where they can remain anonymous and collect a $5,000 reward for a tip leading to an arrest.

All calls to Crimestoppers are anonymous. You can call the police directly as well.
