GLORIA B. SNYDER

Chair, Board of Trustees

Jefferson’s Ferry

Gloria B. Snyder chairs the Board of Trustees at Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Retirement Community, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community in S. Setauket.

What leadership traits have served you well?

My leadership approach is knowledge-seeking, listening to all sides, and being empathic and respectful to all.  As a small business owner, I worked alongside my employees. There was nothing that they had to do that I wouldn’t do myself. In that way I earned their respect and loyalty.

As a board chair, I sit on numerous committees to gain the knowledge to help steer Jefferson’s Ferry in the right direction. Women are softer in our approach. Men look at the bottom line, women at the process.  Both sexes can benefit from each others’ leadership styles.  Ignore the bottom line at your peril.

What key resources have you sought out to help you lead your company/organization?

As the founder of a business and as a board leader and volunteer for multiple non-profit organizations throughout my working life, I have never hesitated to get involved in as many committees as I can to gain a full perspective and fully understand the ins and outs.

The board chair plays a critical role in shaping the future of the board. A key resource for me remains participating in the various committees such as retirement and audit and finance. I put in the work to determine the strengths of the board, and what skills we need to supplement. I will also sit in on other committees if there are certain issues.

This approach was particularly  advantageous during the planning and construction phase of Jefferson’s Ferry’s Journey Towards Renewal, a 5-year multi-million-dollar expansion and renovation project that is nearing completion.  “Journey” is part of a larger strategic initiative launched to create a life-enriching environment for all new and current residents at every stage of their life, including 60 new apartments, 6 new dining venues, expanded gym and physical therapy suite, and a secure memory support neighborhood.

What valuable career lesson or lessons would you like to share with others?

Whatever your career choice or commitment to community service, make sure you have a belief in and passion for the work.  You never want to feel like you’re dragging yourself to a volunteer activity, and you want to face each workday as an enthusiastic, integral part of the team and mission.

What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?

Have confidence in your abilities and use them. Be open to reaching out to others who have experiences and skill sets that you lack. Network. Find a mentor. Take pride in your work and surround yourself with good people. Make sure you do your due diligence and know that there will be tough decisions along the way.

It’s important to be part of a team. A leader is only as good as her team. You can achieve your goals faster by working with others.   Be authentic and be a role model.

Keep in mind, however, that work should not always be your first priority. Make room for your family and friends; cultivate relationships and activities that contribute to your health and wellbeing. If you can get your priorities straight, you’ll experience less pressure, better productivity, and a positive outlook.  Of course there are times when you have to reprioritize, but a solid foundation will keep you in good stead.  You can be a role model on the job, as well as for your family.

What is one quote or phrase you refer to when you need inspiration?

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”   Winston Churchill.

Whenever I address an audience, I weave this quote into my remarks. Volunteerism is integral to my life. I have been very fortunate in my life and that compels me to give back.  My  husband and I donate money, but the time we donate brings the greatest rewards.
