⭐⭐⭐⭐ for Khanmigo! Khan Academy’s AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant receives an overall 4-star rating from Common Sense Media, making it one of their top-rated AI-for-education tools, rising above others like ChatGPT and Bard.

In November, Common Sense Media released its inaugural AI ratings  so parents could better understand how AI works and find out which tools were the most trustworthy. The nonprofit says its AI reviews “act as ‘nutrition’ labels for AI.” We’re thrilled to see these high standards set by a trusted organization that has been a leading independent source of media recommendations and advice for families since 2003.

“We value the notion of a respected third party helping educators and parents understand quality in the sea of tools using artificial intelligence,” said Kristen DiCerbo, Khan Academy’s Chief Learning Officer. “We are pleased that our efforts to make a safe and trustworthy tool were recognized and look forward to continuing to improve Khanmigo based on this feedback.”

Top-rated AI tool Khanmigo as compared to other AI tools

Khanmigo scores high on transparency, safety, trust, learning, and privacy. You can see the full rating and review on Common Sense Media’s website.

As a nonprofit educational organization, Khan Academy believes that AI has the potential to transform learning in a positive way, but we are also keenly aware of the risks. We created specific guidelines for our AI development to help us responsibly adapt AI for an educational setting. In our work, we always put the needs of students and teachers first, and we are focused on ensuring that the benefits of AI are shared equally across society.

When selecting AI tools to use with your children, one consideration you may have is whether the tool was built for an educational purpose or as a multipurpose tool. In general, tools like Khanmigo that were built for education are likely to be better for learning.

Inside the Khanmigo ratings

We are delighted to receive 4 stars, given that we are still in the early days of creating and using this technology.

The review discusses the limitations of Large Language Models (LLMs) doing math. We appreciate that Common Sense Media mentioned this, and we are taking steps to address the issue. Khanmigo is integrated into our award-winning math lessons. Teacher feedback from the first few months of the pilot indicates that Khanmigo helps students answer questions independently. While it is true that LLMs have difficulty with math, we’ve been able to address many of those limitations in just a few short months and feel strongly that Khanmigo holds great potential.

The review states that during Common Sense Media’s testing, Khanmigo would sometimes, albeit infrequently, amplify or reinforce gender biases and stereotypes. We have asked the CSM  team for examples of their findings so we can work to address the problem.

In their review of Khanmigo, Common Sense Media highlights the importance of equity in education. We 100% agree. Khan Academy’s world-class videos, exercises, and articles continue to be free to anyone, anywhere. While we cannot offer Khanmigo for free due to the cost of the AI, we recently dropped the price to $4/month or $44/year.

In every aspect of our work, we intentionally focus on reaching school districts with higher percentages of students from under-resourced communities. For example, some of the schools that participated in the Khanmigo pilot this past spring had populations in which up to 82% of students were eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Additionally, we recently announced a Khanmigo price cut for school districts

We are committed to making AI as affordable and accessible as possible.

Leading and learning about AI for education

We’re really excited about Khanmigo’s 4-star rating from Common Sense Media. It’s a big nod to how hard we’ve worked to make sure Khanmigo is a world-class, AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant. We know that AI in education is still very new, and there’s a lot to figure out. But being one of the top-rated AI tools shows we’re on the right track. We want to say thanks to everyone in the Khan Academy community for trusting us on this journey. Together, we are not just transforming education, we are shaping the future.
