A 6-year-old child is in critical condition and her mother is dead after a domestic violence attack that spanned two counties on Sunday morning.
Law enforcement officers say Daquan Marcato Jones, 32, of 1301 Leggett Road in Rocky Mount, shot four people – a mother, her child, another woman and a man – before dawn in Sharpsburg.
Family of the mother of the child identified her as 27-year-old Kiera Massenburg.
“It happened … and it’s like a Lifetime movie,” said Shaun Alston, a friend of Jones. Alston said he heard Jones walk inside his home on Jamie Road and then gun shots rang out.
“‘Pow … pow,’ and police said ‘Get down! Get down!'” Alston said.
Wilson County sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Sharpsburg Police Department were called to a report of a shooting on Weaver Circle around 5 a.m. There they found a man and a woman, both of whom had been shot. The pair were taken to Vidant Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
Officers determined that Jones then took Massenburg, with whom he had a relationship and her 6-year-old child from that location to a home on Jamie Road in Nash County.
When Nash County deputies entered the Jamie Road home, they found Jones dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. In a car outside the home, they found Massenburg, also dead of a gunshot wound. They believe Jones killed Massenburg and then himself.
According to court record obtained by WRAL News. Jones was arrested with felony assault in July in Edgecombe County, and was scheduled for his first court appearance on Christmas day.
As of 8:50 p.m., the condition of the 6-year-old and the two other adults is unknown. WRAL News does know all three were in surgery.
The homeowner told WRAL News that he had been friends with Jones and his girlfriend for years. He was home when Jones shot himself and police rushed into the home.
Law enforcement officers have not released the names of the other two victims of the shooting, and family members who gathered near the intersection of Gold Drive and Jamie Road did not want to talk to WRAL News.
