Florida Department of Education releases new district ratings, Central Florida shows improvements

The Florida Department of Education has issued letter grades for school districts across the state. In Orange County, this year’s grades were different than in past years.This year is the first year the department used a new grading scale, and also the first time Orange County received an “A” rating since 2019. Of the nine districts in our viewing area, Brevard, Orange, Seminole and Sumter received “A” ratings, while Flagler, Lake, Osceola and Volusia received “B” ratings. Marion County is the only county that received a “C” rating.The Department of Education says 64% of schools across the state earned either an “A” or “B” in this year’s grading, compared to 57% last year. On the other side, less than 4% of schools earned a “D” or “F” this year, which is down from 6% in 2023. Law requires the state to review and adjust the grading scale when data showing learning gains becomes available. According to the department, things like graduation rates and standardized testing scores come into play when determining learning gains.
