Doing so takes some planning and some foresight that college students may not have. The below tips can certainly help college students who are looking to eat healthy even though they don’t have a lot of money.

Eat Fresh

Contrary to popular belief, fresh vegetables and fruit are a lot cheaper than processed and pre-packaged foods. The latter can be easy and convenient, but they can also be a lot more expensive and less healthy.

The time component is the main reason why college students opt for frozen or pre-packaged foods. To remain conscious of time constraints and still eat healthy, try using fresh produce in salads and soups that don’t take a lot of time to make.

The best part about it is that some of these foods, especially soup, can be made in bulk and stored in the fridge and freezer.

Strategically Buy Frozen Vegetables

In the off-season, fresh vegetables and fruit get expensive — if they’re even available — and their quality isn’t as good as it is when it’s in season. A great way to keep eating healthy in the winter while not breaking the bank is by strategically purchasing frozen vegetables.

Some frozen veggies such as peas, corn, spinach, and carrots are really great frozen. They’re inexpensive, too, making eating healthy in the cold months easy and convenient.

Frozen fruits are a good option, but just make sure you buy frozen fruit without added sugars.

Plan in Advance

If you’re on a budget, one of the best ways to eat well and inexpensively is to plan your meals. While most people will suggest planning a week’s worth of meals ahead, you can do it for any period, even a few days.

By planning ahead and writing down your meal plan, you’ll be able to allocate your money properly and see how far your money can go. Writing down the plan will also help you stick to it, as you’ll always have something to refer back to.

Shop at a Grocery Store

Convenience stores are called that for a reason — they’re convenient. However, Eugenio Pallisco says that there’s a price for that convenience.

Not only will shopping at convenience stores eat away at your budget quickly, but it’s also harder to eat healthy if you shop at them.

Grocery stores will help you stretch your budget further. Plus, many more healthy options are available there, including fresh produce and meats. You’ll also have more choices within the same product line.

Finally, grocery stores often run a lot of sales and specials, which gives you the opportunity to save even more money than if you just opt for the store that is the closest to you.
