SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — California requires that the Bay Area build more affordable housing, totaling 441,000 units in the next seven years. Wednesday is the first step toward that when the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority will vote on a $20 billion bond to appear on November’s ballot.

Wednesday’s action could allow voters in all Bay Area counties to decide if they want to fund more affordable housing. In this case, it’s 90,000 units.

The bond has the support of many Bay Area mayors, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, whose cities are like the rest of the state: struggling with homelessness and affordable housing.
