SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments took place Wednesday, right here in the birthplace of basketball.

The Springfield Women’s Series included eight teams in the field with the top finishers improving their allocation opportunities for future stops along the way to the Women’s Series Final.

22News had the opportunity to see some of the best basketball players in the world show off their skills and talents with this unique 3-on-3 format. The game is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. This format of 3-on-3 speeds up the state of play and athletes have to make decisions a lot faster and make reads very quickly with their teammates. Ultimately, creating a very dynamic exciting viewing experience!

Damon Huffman a court coach for USA basketball told 22News about the significance of Wednesday’s series, “It’s super important for them to be here today. This is there preparation for the Olympics, this is where you get to decide who’s on the roster, who’s going to the Olympics and so you have all these teams, different athletes, different basketball players, different pros. So it’s been an awesome experience seeing them all competing at the highest level.”

The Springfield Women’s Series marks the first FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series event hosted in the United States since the Series’ inception in 2019.
