(FOX40.COM) — Three people were killed and several others were injured in a Sutter County car crash on Saturday morning.

Around 11:40 a.m., a 20-year-old man in a 2015 Dodge Challenger was driving southbound on Highway 99, north of State Route 113, when he allowed the Dodge to cross over into the northbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

After entering oncoming traffic lanes, the 20-year-old, who was not wearing a seatbelt, crashed directly into the front of a 2010 Nissan Sentra being driven by a 48-year-old man. Police said there was also a 42-year-old woman in the passenger seat. The driver of the Dodge and the two occupants of the Nissan were pronounced dead at the scene.

Several other passengers were in the Dodge during the crash including a 21-year-old woman, two 18-year-old men, and a 16-year-old boy. One passenger refused medical help while the others were transported to Adventist Health + Rideout Hospital for minor and major injuries, according to CHP. One person required a transfer to UC Davis Medical Center for specialty treatment.

The identities of the deceased will be released after their families have been notified. CHP said the names of the other occupants are being withheld because of the severity of their injuries.

Following the crash, Highway 99 northbound at SR-113 was closed for about three hours while law enforcement and emergency personnel investigated and cleared the scene. Police suspect drugs or alcohol may have contributed to the crash.
