Family of man fatally shot by Carol Stream police hires Chicago civil rights attorney

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — The family of Isaac Goodlow III, who was fatally shot by police at a Carol Stream apartment complex early Saturday morning, has hired Chicago civil rights attorney Andrew Stroth to explore legal options.

Goodlow, 30, was shot and killed in an incident that took place just before 5 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of East St. Charles Road at Carol Stream’s Villagebrook Apartments when two officers called to a domestic violence incident discharged their firearms. Authorities say the incident remains under investigation.

Stroth and Goodlow’s family are scheduled to hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Monday.

“Thirty-year-old Isaac Goodlow was unarmed and unjustifiably shot early Saturday morning,” Stroth said in a statement.

According to the Carol Stream Police Department, officers responded to reports of domestic violence at the apartment complex just after 4 a.m. Saturday and found a woman injured.

Brian Cluever, acting Carol Stream Chief of Police, did not say specifically what prompted two officers to fire their weapons, but he said the officers encountered a “tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving situation.”

Goodlow, later identified by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office, was transported to Central DuPage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say Goodlow was a Chicagoland resident.

“He was very loving,” said Dajanae Barnes, Goodlow’s niece. “All his nieces and nephews loved him. He was like our favorite uncle. Everybody loved him, our little brothers. He raised us. We all lived in the same house.”

The Carol Stream Police Department confirmed that all officers’ body cameras were activated during the incident.

In accordance with the department’s policy, the officers involved have been placed on paid leave while the state’s attorney’s office and the Public Integrity Unit of the DuPage Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigations Team (MERIT) — made up of several DuPage County law enforcement agencies — reviews the body-camera footage and conducts an investigation.
