This morning, the Biden-Harris campaign has announced they will be opening a field office in Georgia in Savannah. The announcement comes on the heels of launching a national push in Philadelphia earlier this week.
Later today, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, State Senator Derek Mallow, plus State Representatives Al Williams and Edna Jackson will host an event in Savannah a campaign office opening to launch the Black Voters for Biden-Harris outpost in South Georgia.
This push comes after the Biden-Harris campaign announced they will hold engagement events. These events will be held at churches, block parties, barber shops and hair salons. The chief issue the Biden-Harris campaign faces is speaking to low-information voters. The campaign also must speak to those that get their news primarily from social media.
Jamal Simmons, a former staffer with VP Harris, recently spoke to Morehouse students ahead of their commencement ceremony. During his conversation, he said the students read news from various online sources. Outlets named were Apple News, Instagram and TikTok, the Guardian, Wall Street Journal and USA Today. Three students admitted watching the news on TV and none read actual newspapers.
A recent Washington Post poll found that just 41 percent of Black Americans ages 18 to 39 are certain to vote this year — down from 61 percent in June 2020. That information gap may be attributed to this statistic. Also, feelings persist that the Biden administration had not made good on any of its policy promises to Black Americans. But, the Biden-Harris Administration has conducted interviews with many Black media outlets and personalities. Why? To dispel and confront the misinformation that runs rampant online.
Currently, the Biden-Harris Administration announced a $16 billion investment into America’s HBCUs. They also tout the lowest Black unemployment rate on record and Black wealth up 60% since before the pandemic. Plus, under the Biden-Harris administration, the racial wealth gap has shrunk the most in the last 20 years. Seniors and other individuals are paying lower prescription drug prices and insulin costs capped at $35. Black small businesses are growing at the fastest pace in decades. Lastly, the Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven more than $5 billion in student loan debts.
Conversely, Trump has tried in his own way to court Black voters. Also, the Republican National Committee opened a Black Recruitment Center in College Park when Herschel Walker ran for the United States Senate in 2022. The RNC says they’re reaching out to Black voters, but certain states have shut down operations directed toward Black voters due to blowback from embracing any Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative.
However, former Sen. Warnock campaign manager and Ellaville, Georgia native Quentin Fulks now serves as the Biden-Harris Principal Deputy Campaign Manager. Additionally, Communications Director Michael Tyler is a Georgia native. Both men say they have taken the work seriously and are dedicated to closing the gap, especially among Black voters.
“Today’s launch of the Black Voters for Biden-Harris coalition is yet another example of our campaign working diligently to earn every single vote,” Fulks said in a statement. “This coalition and the newly announced summer outreach and engagement programming serve as the next phase of our campaign’s ongoing historic investments in outreach to the backbone of the Biden-Harris coalition: Black voters.
While we are busy putting in the work to earn Black America’s support, Donald Trump continues to show just how ignorant he is. Hosting janky rap concerts doesn’t hide the fact that he lacks the resources and competence to genuinely engage our community. We will continue to be aggressive, innovative, and thorough in our work to earn the support of the very voters who sent Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House in 2020 and will do so again in 2024.
