Update: As of 8:10 a.m. on Sunday, the fire has spread to 12,500 acres and is at 15% containment, according to Cal Fire.
(KRON) — A wildfire that broke out near the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on Saturday afternoon has spread to over 12,500 acres, according to CalFire. Officials issued an evacuation order to anyone nearby.
Fire officials reported a large fire at 2:30 p.m. on the north side of Corral Hollow Road east of Interstate 580, near Lawrence Livermore Lab Site 300, located southwest of Tracy. Caltrans said the major fire is causing zero visibility and that I-580 from Corral Hollow Road to I-5 is closed in both directions.
Two Alameda County firefighters have been injured whilst attempting to contain a fire estimated to be 11,047 acres in size on Saturday, the Alameda County Fire Department said.
At 5:50 p.m. on Saturday, the San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services (SJCOES) placed an evacuation order. Anyone in the area west of I-580 south of Corral Hollow Road to the area around the Tracy Country Club area are advised to leave now, SJCOES said.
A temporary evacuation site will be at Larch Clover Community Center, located at 11157 W Larch Road in Tracy.
Officials from CalFire, Alameda Co. Fire, Tracy Fire Department, and Livermore/Pleasanton Fire are working together to contain the fire. As of 11:20 p.m., the fire has been 13% contained, CalFire said.
The two Alameda Co. firefighters are said to have suffered “minor to moderate burn injuries” on Saturday Alameda Fire said in a statement. They have since been taken to nearby local hospitals.
Despite initial reports, fire officials are clarifying that this was not the result of a controlled burn scheduled earlier this week.
The cause of the fire is unknown as of this report. “Right now, wind is a factor,” Alameda fire crews said.
