Elizabeth Banks and Kumail Nanjiani enthusiastically joined the voice cast of “Migration,” Illumination’s latest original comedy, and for both, the decision was a no-brainer.

“Migration” narrates the adventures of a duck family embarking on a thrilling, feathered vacation into the unknown. Dad Mack (voiced by Nanjiani) prefers the safety of their New England pond, while mom Pam (Banks) is eager to show their kids, Dax (Caspar Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal), the broader world. Pam persuades Mack to take the family on a journey to tropical Jamaica after encountering a migrating duck family with tales of far-flung places.

As the Mallards make their way south, their well-planned trip takes unexpected turns, leading to an enriching experience that broadens their horizons, introduces new friends, and teaches them more about each other and themselves.

Nanjiani, drawn to the film’s family-friendly appeal, expressed, “I just thought that, at its base, ‘Migration’ was a really good family movie.” He highlighted the rarity of such films in today’s landscape and cited the chance to work with admired industry figures like Chris Meledandri, Mike White, and Elizabeth Banks as additional incentives.

Elizabeth Banks and Kumail Nanjiani Share Their Enthusiasm for Illumination's "Migration"

Banks, excited to be part of Illumination’s family, praised the studio’s distinct and enjoyable films. She noted, “I wanted to be a part of ‘Migration’ because I think Chris Meledandri is a genius, and Illumination films speak for themselves. They are all just incredibly distinct, so I knew ‘Migration’ would be really funny and subversive, and that it would be both for kids and adults.”

Beyond family dynamics, the movie explores the relationship between Mack and Pam, whose opposing life philosophies become central to the plot. Nanjiani sees the film as a romantic story, emphasizing the couple’s journey to reconnect and rediscover their passion for each other. Banks agrees, emphasizing the sense of adventure and the need for couples to work together in facing challenges.

The movie’s life-affirming message resonates with both actors. Banks appreciates the film’s encouragement to break out of comfort zones and embrace adventure, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nanjiani echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the film’s exploration of the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone, evolving relationships, and embracing new experiences.

In addition to its uplifting message, the actors highlight the film’s visual appeal and fun factor, making “Migration” an enjoyable and stunning cinematic experience.
