Metrolina Association for the Blind is hosting a Solar Eclipse Party that’s accessible for people who are blind or have low vision.

The event takes place Monday, April 8, 2024, at 2 p.m., at Eastway Regional Recreation Center, 3150 Eastway Park Drive, Charlotte, North Carolina.

It’s free to attend, but space is limited and registration is required.

They’ll have a device called LightSound that was developed for the blind community, enabling them to experience the solar eclipse through sound.

A sensor measures the light brightness, and an on-board computer converts that value into sound. As the moon passes across the sun, its shadow moves across the earth. The shadow causes the light to dim, which causes the pitch to drop.

At this event there will also be snacks and tactile experiences.

The LightSound Project is building 750+ devices to be distributed for free to groups hosting eclipse events. Learn all about the LightSound device.
